first day without a Pope

Dear Family and Friends,

Well, we have no Pope. But we do have a Pope Emeritus, and that’s a lot better than having none at all!

In his farewell yesterday, at first he said “I am no longer the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church,” and then he corrected himself, “or I will be until 8:00 this evening and then no longer.”

He was in a hurry to make way for his successor! I think this is another sign that Benedict was never in it for himself. He started out calling himself “a humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord”, and that’s who he has been these 8 years. Now he’s stepping aside to be “simply a pilgrim who begins the last leg of his pilgrimage on earth.”

The Cardinals start their preparatory meetings next Monday the 4th. I’ve heard that the Conclave could begin as early as Sunday the 10th.

They say that “the Holy Spirit chooses who the next Pope will be, and all the Cardinals have to do is figure out who that is.” No easy task!

Let’s pray that now more than ever they may be guided and enlightened in their momentous decision so that God’s will may be done.

God bless you,
Brother Kevin
